Cartoonist / Illustrator wanted

20 Apr

We are very excited to announce that we’re currently in the process of creating our very first Naked Vegan Cookbook! The idea for us to include writing on positive body image, veganism, and of course lots of yummy recipes. We currently get 20,000 hits per week on this blog, and have good links with vegan and naturist communities, which we think will give us a good base from which to publicise the book.

Having being inspired by this recent post featuring a comic strip – we have taken the decision not to include any naked photos in the book. Instead we want to have cartoons of naked people to go with photos of the food. This is because we think it will make it much easier to get the book stocked in mainstream bookshops, also because it will look really cool!

There will be quite a high commitment level to this project, we will need illustrations for 100-200 pages of content, to be produced between the start of June and the end of August this year. The book will then be completed and printed in September, and hopefully selling well by christmas time. We are not offering any money up-front, instead you will be entitled to 40% of all profits from the book. You can live anywhere in the world, we can collaborate through skype and other collaborative tools.

Interested in getting involved? Please send us an email at nakedvegancooking[at] telling us who you are and why you want to get involved. Let us know of any relevant experience you have, and how you plan to organise your time to ensure that all the work gets done on schedule. Please also include a mock-up of a front cover incorporating the below image and any any other examples of artwork you think we might like to see. The deadline is the 4th of May.

After the deadline, we will take a week or so to discuss between ourselves and make a shortlist. The shortlisted individuals will then be interviewed either in person (if your local) or by skype.

The comics sound like a great idea, but I wouldn’t worry too much about the mainstream bookstores. I can rarely find the kinds of books I want in the big chain stores (they generally stock the Vegan Cooking for Dummies style), and the smaller, niche stores are more likely to be aligned with your philosophies anyway.
The Harry Potter books had two covers, one with bright, childish colours, and the other with more sombre “adult” covers (so that adults reading it on the train wouldn’t be embarrassed). You could always produce a book with illustrations and another with photos 🙂

Unfourtunatly I cant seem to post picture replies so i cant post the idea gen i have done already ( lets just hope my email is behaving and sends them to you) so I will simply say why i am suitable for the job. I am a freelance designer with 4 years experience running my own company. I also have a design and visual arts degree and an art history degree so I have plenty of experience. I am also ( as you will know from meeting me at the swims) a long time naturist and as such am very keen on anything that promotes positive body image and healthy eating. This brief will have my passion and priority from the moment you take me on to the moment it is finished. I have never missed a deadline through any fault of my own. I am also willing to offer the work at a reduced rate, meaning you will recieve professional work and retain more of the proffits to put into future projects.

If I were you,I’d think twice about the decision not to include nude pics. The Vegan movement is well established and already has a wealth of materials on the market, including cook books. The nudist Vegan movement? Not so much. If you were to include pictures of you all walking the walk as you talk the talk, this tome would be recognized as an actual nudist publication and become essential for the collection of a number of nudists for years to come, even non-vegans(who,in some cases, might actually give it a try). As far as your concerns about book stores refusing to stock it,well,I can walk into any major chain and purchase a wide selection of figure-drawing guides, anatomy texts or even sex and relationship self-helpers that prominently feature full nudity. As long as nothing lewd is included(and I wouldn’t think that would be an issue),I don’t think these stores would have a problem carrying it. Whatever the case,I wish you the best of luck with this project. Keep on cookin’!

For what it’s worth, I think using illustrations rather than photos is a mistake. A huge part of the charm and character of this site is the photographs – real people cooking vegan food in the buff. Frankly, there are tonnes of vegan recipe sites (and books!) out there – by losing the pictures you’re losing what makes this site different from all of the others. Why would people choose your book over the other hundreds of vegan cookbooks?

Also, it would be odd to see a book written by body-positive naturists – indeed, specifically written *because* of these attitudes – and not see any naked bodies. Worse in fact, because we’ll see tasteful illustrations of naked people instead. To my mind, this sends entirely the wrong message about body acceptance – it strikes me as self-censorship.

Have you spoken to the buyers for the major bookstores? Or any of the major book wholesalers? (I’m assuming that you’re self-publishing) Don’t assume that you’ll sell more because you avoid actual, real nudity in the book. Try the buyers at Gardners Books or Bertram Books. See whether they’d be more interested in the quirky, real deal or the more sanitised version you’re proposing.

I’m a big fan of what you guys have done with the website, and you seem like great guys. So have the courage of your convictions!

(And good luck with it, however you choose to do it)
